The Arkansas State Police is comprised of two types of employees, commissioned law enforcement (troopers) and civilian personnel.

While approximately two-thirds of the employees are troopers, the department relies on approximately 300 full-time and part-time civilian employees to fill administrative and support positions.

Regulatory Services Section

Within the Administrative Services Division, one of the department's largest sections, the Regulatory Services Section, provides a variety of licensing and regulatory functions for private individuals and public corporations.

The Regulatory Services Section is responsible for oversight of private investigators and private security companies, precious metal businesses, used motor vehicle dealers, motor vehicle salvage auction buyers and blue light sales. Regulatory Services personnel also regulate concealed handgun licenses and perform criminal background checks.

The duties of the State Fire Marshal are also administered from the Regulatory Services Section. Licensing and inspections relating to explosives and fireworks, fire sprinkler systems and explosive materials storage facilities as well public safety education are part of the duties of the State Fire Marshal.
